This is so true. Separation Anxiety is a really issue for many dog owners. I’ve never really seen a good solution to it. But that changed yesterday. I watched a YouTube video from one of my fav dog trainers on this subject. And his solution was brilliant. He said you can train your dog out of separation anxiety by using a strategy rehabs use with recovering addicts: replace a destructive addiction with a pleasurable activity. Fifteen minutes before you leave the house put a Kong filled with your dog’s fav treat in the dog crate (like peanut butter or frozen meat pate) and close the door. Make sure your dog watches you do it. Then when you’re ready to leave, open the door of the crate. Your dog will rush in to play with the Kong, close the crate door, and leave. Don’t say anything during this training exercise. Don’t make eye contact. Just be very matter of fact about it. What you’re doing is training your dog to see you leaving for work every day or to run errands for a few hours as a pleasurable activity rather than a stressful one. Pretty brilliant, isn’t it?!!
