“I thought all we need to do is to have a dog at Picard’s side. And that, without any dialogue or any dramatic reference, will say a lot about this man, that he now has a dog always at his side.”
– Sir Patrick Stewart, actor (13 July 1940 – 28 October 2026)
Sir Patrick was a passionate supporter of rescue dogs, especially pit bulls. In 2017, he and his wife began fostering pit bulls in Los Angeles, starting with a dog named Ginger. They were unable to permanently adopt Ginger because the UK enforced a breed-specific ban. This led him to advocate against breed-specific legislation; he partnered with the ASPCA as the spokesman for National Dogfighting Awareness Day and received a Pit Bull Advocate & Protector Award.
He chose a pit bull, Dinero, as his side kick in Star Trek Picard (the dog’s character was given the name Number One).
Rest in peace, Sir Patrick.
