Could Healthy Gut Bacteria Help Calm Itchy Skin

When dogs have allergies, the problem may not start with the skin.

A growing body of research suggests that the community of bacteria living in the digestive tract, known as the gut microbiome, plays an important role in the immune system. When that community becomes unbalanced, it may contribute to inflammation throughout the body, including the skin. 

Researchers are now exploring an intriguing question:

Could restoring healthy gut bacteria help reduce allergy symptoms in dogs?

Looking Beyond the Skin

Canine atopic dermatitis is a common allergic skin condition in dogs caused by a combination of problems with the skin’s protective barrier and the immune system. 

What starts as an occasional or seasonal itch can become a frustrating cycle of more intense or persistent scratching and licking. Dogs with atopic dermatitis have red, irritated skin, hair loss, and recurring skin infections, which can impact quality of life.

Treatments available today can keep the itching and irritation under control for many dogs, but finding what works can be challenging, and ongoing care is often needed.

Scientists wondered whether improving gut health could calm the immune system from the inside out and ultimately reduce the itching and irritation of allergic skin disease.

Testing a New Approach

Researchers conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial in dogs with atopic dermatitis.

To test whether healthier gut bacteria could reduce itching and other signs of allergic skin disease, some dogs received a fecal microbiota transplant (FMT), a treatment that takes healthy gut bacteria from the stool of a carefully screened donor dog and transfers them into another dog’s digestive system. Others received a placebo.

The goal was to determine whether changing the gut microbiome could improve allergy symptoms and reduce the amount of medication dogs needed to stay comfortable. 

What They Found

The results were encouraging.

Dogs receiving fecal microbiota transplantation developed less severe skin disease than dogs receiving the placebo. They also required less medication to control their allergy symptoms during the study. 

While additional studies are needed to confirm these findings and determine which dogs are most likely to benefit, the results provide exciting data that the gut microbiome may become an important target for future allergy treatments.

Why This Matters

For years, scientists have viewed allergies primarily as a skin problem. Research like this suggests the story may be much bigger.

The gut and the immune system are closely connected. By restoring a healthier balance of beneficial bacteria, it may be possible to reduce inflammation throughout the body, not just treat the symptoms that appear on the skin. 

Although fecal microbiota transplantation is still an emerging therapy and is not a treatment owners should attempt on their own, this research opens an exciting new avenue for managing allergies in dogs.

Every new discovery brings researchers one step closer to treatments that work with the body’s natural systems to improve health.
