Royal visit to New Zealand – the dog connection

Today was the last day in New Zealand for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (aka Will and Kate).  And finally, we have something dog-related from this visit!

The Duke and Duchess visited the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua this morning.  There, they met puppies, dogs in training, and fully-fledged police dogs.

And after this doggy (and soggy) visit, the Royals are now off to their next stop on the Royal Tour – Australia.   I hope Australia’s dogs will also be able to participate in their visit!

The Duchess and the Wolfhound

This week, the Duchess of Cambridge visited the Irish Guards to present sprigs of shamrocks to the regiment’s members. That included Domhnall, the Guards’ mascot. Domhnall is an Irish Wolfhound (how appropriate!)

Awaiting the royal baby…

William and KateAs the world awaits the arrival of William and Kate’s baby (which by all accounts is due in days), I’m wondering if there’s anything in this happy event that can help animal welfare.

What if shelters around the world named puppies born on the new Prince or Princess’s birthday after the royal baby?  That way, adoptive owners will be adopting their own royal baby and can take part in the historic event.

Let’s hope that all of the puppies born that day are healthy and able to thrive in loving homes!

Lady royals delight – in dog biscuits!

I think I’m becoming a royalist.  The top ladies (the Queen, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge) are all dog owners.  And this week the people at Fortnum &  Mason knew how to please them.

Each of the royals was gifted with a hamper which included Hearty Treats for Happy Hounds when they visited the retailer based in Piccadilly.

“Of course they all have dogs and we do want to think about what our customers like,” said Fortnum’s managing director Beverley Aspinall.

William, Kate and Cocker Spaniel make three

People magazine speculated several weeks ago that Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, had expanded their family to include a puppy.  “The dog beside William and Kate’s side is most likely a black cocker spaniel.”

It’s now been confirmed.  The Prince and his wife are owners of a male cocker spaniel whose name hasn’t been released.  The pup will be company for Kate, who is home alone for the next six weeks as Prince William takes up his military posting in the Falkland Islands.

For my part, it’s nice to see the Royals confirm that they are dog people.  (As we know, the Queen has always been partial to the Corgi – read my previous blog posting on this breed).

May Kate, William and their little bundle of joy enjoy a happy life together!
