Joey and the Pit Bull

People who have autism are often misunderstood.  So are Pit Bulls.  These two make a great pair.

My temporary dogs

One of the great things about visiting and working at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is the range of dogs available for sleepovers.  Since I am on my final night of sleepovers, it is time to pay tribute to all four of my sleepover dogs…

Timothy, a one-year oldAmerican Staffordshire Terrier. Beautiful boy with good manners. I'm sorry we fed you so many treats in training class that we caused your diarrhea!

Chester, a Boxer cross (I think Boxer/Mastiff cross because of his wrinkles and large head size), age 7. Chester is very bright and we practiced 'sit' during his stay. A snuggly boy who snores!

Madison, a young pit mix. A fairly new arrival at Best Friends, she's not even on the website yet. Really intelligent, and happily slept the night through. Only drawback - she's a covers hog who enjoys the middle of the bed.

Clover, another fairly new arrival and her photo isn't on the website yet. A cattle dog mix, this young girl has good manners on leash and loves to disembowel toys. A rubber chicken and a small squeaky sheep were victims during our evening together.

These dogs and many others can be viewed through the Best Friends website and so if you are thinking about adoption, this website is well worth a look.

Sanctuary

A sanctuary is a place of refuge or asylum.  Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah is a place of refuge for homeless animals; it is also a relaxing and peaceful place for the humans (like me) who visit and volunteer here.  Think of it as a refuge from the rat race of everyday work and life.

If you would like a holiday where you can give back and help homeless dogs and other animals, I hope you will think about Best Friends!

At Angels Rest

Today, I ate my lunch at Angels Rest, one of the two pet cemeteries at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  This large cemetery is the resting place of many animals including some sanctuary animals (in recent years, a new cemetery for sanctuary animals and the companion animals of Best Friends staff has been used).

This is truly a peaceful place and a fitting tribute to the role of animals in our lives.  It’s a wonderful location for some peace and quiet and reflection.

Here’s a number of photos and a brief video tour of Angels Rest:

Sleeping with Timothy

Firstly, I’d like to say that this will not be an x-rated post!

Timothy is my Sleepover Dog tonight from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  Timothy was abandoned at the sanctuary, left to fend on his own on the property until someone found him.  This is a risky strategy because the area is home to mountain lions, rattlesnakes and other deadly creatures.

Timothy face shot

Because of the nature of his surrender, there are no records on why he was abandoned.  He’s a young boy of just over a year and he’s very sociable.

You may notice in these photos that Timothy is wearing a green collar.  Green collars signify dogs that can be handled by adults and children who visit the sanctuary.

Peeing Timothy

Timothy enjoyed riding in the car on the way home tonight.  He also let me know that he prefers to sleep on the bed, not the blanket that accompanied him in his overnight pack.

Sleeping Timothy

I particularly find Timothy’s underbite appealing and so far, the only negative behaviours he’s shown is a liking for digging in the rubbish (a common characteristic of many dogs, which is very manageable) and a dislike for two people wearing large cowboy hats.

I’ll be submitting a full assessment form when I return Timothy to his kennel in the morning.

Timothy is a very trainable dog (he already knows sit) and would make someone a lovely pet.

Hurricane Sandy animal rescue

Weeks after Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of New York and New Jersey, animal rescue efforts continue.

In the affected areas, shelters were hit hard with damage and loss of power.    And because people are busy trying to recover from the storm, potential adopters just aren’t coming through the doors like they used to.  Through donations to a range of charities such as Best Friends and the Humane Society, animals are being re-located to safer areas of the country for adoption.

Earlier today, for example, 60 cats and dogs were flown to California on a plane donated by Southwest Airlines.  Crew members donated their time and BP donated the fuel.

You can help The Helen Woodward Animal Center by making a donation in support of the Hurricane Sandy refugees.

In other rescue news, the ASPCA has established a new emergency boarding centre in Brooklyn thanks to a $500,000 donation by television personality Rachael Ray.    The boarding facility will help families care for their pets because their homes have been destroyed or badly damaged.

And the Best Friends Animal Society continues to help through grants to a range of animal welfare organisations in the area.  Here’s their latest update:

Thank you for the outpouring of support for rescue groups and shelters in need after the tragedy of Hurricane Sandy. Your generosity has been astounding.

Because of you, Best Friends has—in a very short time– been able to award nearly $50,000 in grants to groups in need throughout the region. Here’s just a sample of some of the organizations we’ve been able to help.

Groups like Liberty Humane in Jersey City NJ were able to get help after the roof of their kennel was blown off! They had no power for eight days, their medicines were destroyed, and despite it, they were working to distribute pet supplies to displaced residents in their area. Thanks to you, we were able to offer financial assistance to help them rebuild.

Groups like Little Guild of St. Francis in Connecticut who took in 88 animals from areas affected by the floods were able to get some relief from those extra costs.

Road Runner Rescue in Upper Fairmount, Maryland had rescued more than 5,000 animals from high kill shelters over the past seven years, when suddenly, all of their medical supplies were wiped out from the storm.

“The supplies we lost were not just for our animals, but we also share them with our local county facilities,” said Sue Nevins, Road Runner’s founder. There are a lot of homeless pets depending on us….Our budget is already very tight and we recently had a costly cat surgery that was stretching our funds. Thank you Best Friends for supporting us in our time of need. We’re all in this together and it’s wonderful to be part of a great effort to save more lives.”

All in all, 14 animal groups and shelters so far have received desperately needed assistance, thanks to your support of Best Friends’ disaster relief. Thank you for pulling together for all of the victims of this storm at a time when it means so much to so many.

We’re continuing to give out grants to organizations affected by the storm, and we’ll keep you posted as shelters and rescue groups continue to rebuild. Your kindness is truly appreciated.

Michael Vick wants a dog (for his kids)

His 3-year ban on dog ownership is coming to an end and Michael Vick wants a dog, for his kids, he says.

Let’s not forget the dogs Mr Vick owned in the past – 13 dead, 51 seized from Bad Newz Kennels in 2007, with 47 ultimately surviving after being rehabilitated at places like Best Friends Animal Society (Best Friends took in 22).

Lucas and Mel are just two of the “Vicktory Dogs” seized from Michael Vick and placed with the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Photos by Gary Kalpakoff for Best Friends.

Finding dog friendly accommodation

Many sites operated by the major hotel and motel chains in the US are pet friendly – but many are not.    When planning a trip with your dog this (northern hemisphere) summer, there’s a site that can help you.  It’s called Pets Welcome.  This site has a search engine for finding dog friendly accommodation that fits with your trip’s itinerary.

Best of all, the site is not limited to the major chains.  Independent operators are also listed.  For example, during my recent trip to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, I stayed at the Treasure Trail Motel and they are included in the Pets Welcome directory.

There are lots of properties that are seeing the value in offering dog friendly accommodation.  Here’s a brief synopsis of the number of properties amongst the major chains:
